Contextual Value Added

What is Contextual Value Added?

Since 2002 value added measures have been used for the Achievement and Attainment Tables. Their aim is to provide information that helps the education system measure the attainment of pupils and compare it to pupils with similar prior attainment.

Many factors are related to the progress of pupils in a school such as special education needs and levels of deprivation. Contextual Value Added will now use these factors when measuring the progress made by individual pupils and the effectiveness of a school.

The 2006 models include the following attainment and contextual factors:

  • Gender
  • First language (for given prior attainment)
  • Special Educational Needs
  • Pupil prior attainment
  • An “In care” indicator
  • Measures of pupil mobility
  • Free School Meals (for given Ethnicity)
  • Age
  • Income Deprivation Affecting Children Index (IDACI)
  • Ethnicity
  • Average and range of prior attainment within the school (KS2-3, KS2-4 and KS3-4 only)
  • A new system was piloted to measure progress between KS2-KS4. These measures will be published for all secondary schools featuring in the 2006 Secondary School Achievement and Attainment Tables.

What does it mean for your school? After all the year 11 exam results have been processed the average for each CVA category is calculated. Every student's results are compared to the average. If they get more than the average, it helps your school's CVA. If they get less, your school's CVA will suffer.

    What do we do?

We work with vulnerable young people in schools and colleges. Our interventions help them overcome their social, emotional and attitudinal barriers to learning and prepare them for adulthood. This in turn helps schools increase their CVA score.

We have experience in working with the following young people.

    1. Special Education Needs
    2. Low Achievers
    3. Deprived
    4. Come from children or foster homes
    5. Experiencing low confidence and low self-esteem
    6. At risk, suffering abuse, neglect
    7. Exhibiting negative attitudes and behaviours
    8. Disengaged
    9. Semi-exclusions
